details

  • This class is for visual artists and photographers who are interested in pushing their creativity and exploring their role as artists and their approach to picture-making.

Although the ideas and content presented in the lessons will resonate with artists from a variety of disciplines, the exercises and assignments are designed specifically for photographers.

Typo was created to meet each photographer at whatever stage they are at in their individual or professional creative growth. We’ll be examining our work and identity with a holistic approach, and the concepts and lessons can be applied to photographers with years of experience or visual artists wanting to explore a new medium.

We see this class as especially suited for:

Photographers or visual artists who have reached a point in their artistic development where they feel their work has plateaued, become repetitive, or are ready for a renewed sense of creative growth within their craft.

    As well as:

Photographers or visual artists who are already fully immersed in the process of learning to make art from a place of truth and vulnerability, who would like to look even deeper into their relationship with photography.

Please note: This is not a class that teaches the basic technical aspects of photography, although lessons will touch on the subjects of composition, how to build a pictures that deliver emotional impact, color theory, and more.

  • Four+ live classes, 1-3 hrs in length:

    - Mini lessons with live participation / guided exercises

    - Discussion/Interview/Lesson with a guest artist.

    - Mid-month discussion about the concepts and lessons introduced in the beginning of each month, with the opportunity for students to connect and share their progress on that month's exercises and photo assignment.

    - An end of month image review of the monthly assignment with peer feedback.

Pre-recorded lessons: Short, digestible videos aimed at introducing a practicable idea. Subjects range from failure, to identifying themes within your work, to color theory. Each lesson includes case studies that introduce students to both mainstream and lesser-known artists who are practicing the concepts that are presented.

Accompanying self-guided exercises to help integrate the ideas from the lessons into personal practice.

A photo assignment combining elements from each lesson, which challenges students to push beyond their creative limits and think outside the labels they’ve assigned to themselves as artists.

An opportunity to meet with Chantal and Molly individually (each student receives two 2:1 meetings as part of the program.

Daily inspiration delivered via email or text, with an action, question, reflection or focus for the day. The daily videos are an accountability tool for creating habits that keep the students in a space of inspiration and creative growth.

    Daily Cell Phone Challenge Prompts

  • In order to preserve a safe and intimate space for learning, seats will be limited to 22 individuals. This includes two scholarship seats.

  • The Typo Workshop not only offers the structure for creative growth but an emphasis on community building. We believe that peer accountability and support is a hugely valuable part of each student's experience. We ask that each individual makes a commitment not just to themselves but to the group, and that they show up in class and in their own lives for these 90 days as open, willing to consider new ideas, face old beliefs and limitations and hold themselves and each other accountable to remain open to creative inspiration wherever it takes them.

The class also includes a Facebook group to foster community, where students are encouraged to share their questions, struggles and support for each other throughout the workshop.
